THE BEST OF WHAT'S AROUND

Shinoyama Kishin

Caricature by WADA Makoto

Kishin SHINOYAMA was born in 1940 in Shinjuku (Tokyo, Japan).

He studied photography at Tokyo Nihon Daigaku University (1961-1963) and made a name for himself in the field of commercial photography (Most Promising Young Photographer Award in 1966) while working for Light Publicity agency, from which he resigned in 1968 to become a free-lance photographer. His career sky-rockets with the publication of his first photobook, 28 Girls (1968), soon after the exhibitions of the photographs it entails.

Renowned, sulfurous and prolific photographer, Shinoyama's main interest is the human body : he thus focuses mainly on undressed and nude pictures — featuring stars as famous as Rie MIYAZAWA (Santa Fe), Masahiro MOTOKI (White Room), Saki TAKAOKA (One Two Three, Time Difference) or Riona HAZUKI (Riona, Tsubaki) — without neglecting the main and peculiar figures of arts such as dance (Vladimir MALAKHOV, Akiko KANDA : Dancer, Akiko) or theater, including kabuki (Tamasaburo BANDO V : Onnagata Tamasaburo, Bando Tamasaburo) or the Takarazuka Review ( Yoka WAO : Stage).
Nevertheless, it is not exclusive of splendid travel books (Rio, Paris, Silk Road, NY, Australia, Venice, Arabia, &c.), and another red string in his work would be the Japanese megalopolis of Tokyo, present in his work since the beginning (28 Girls) and thereafter appears again in the form of luxury albums, such as Tokyo Nude, Tokyo Mirai Seiki, Tokyo Addict or Roppongi Hills.

Shinoyama also houses a constant care of ever-renewed, polymorphic photographic expression, thus dwells on the technical aspects of photography (creation of the "Shinorama", from 3 to 3x3 linked cameras) and, contrarily to rather unchanging photographers such as Daido Moriyama, he changes the size, grain and colors of his shots from one series to the other — which makes his work, to critics's despair, hard to categorize, and gives it a very peculiar and most fortunate dimension.

He's still alive and kickin' and numerous exhibitions of his works are held every year around the world.
A sure personal favorite.
