Remarques & avis / Review — The island of Hachijojima, located 300 km south of Tokyo, of which it is dependent, was not treated too nicely by history and wars, and ended up as land of confinement of exiles and convicts. It thus also was a land of repentance, and numerous images of Buddha, of paint, wood, stone and clay, can be found there — far from the touristic center it now became. At the end of the 1960s, beginning of the 1970s, SUGIMURA excelled in rendering these icons gnawled by wind, salt and moss. In addition, splendid landscapes and a few very striking scenes and portraits. A beautiful book. Uncommon.
L'île d'Hachijojima, située à 300 km au sud de Tokyo, dont elle dépend, ne fut pas favorisée par l'histoire et les guerres, et fut terre et parc des exilés et condamnés. Elle fut de ce fait aussi terre de repentance, et l'on y trouve nombre images de Bouddha, en peinture, pierre, bois, terre — bien loin du centre touristique qu'elle est à présent devenue. A la fin des années 1960, début des années 1970, SUGIMURA sut ici superbement rendre ces effigies rongées par les vents, le sel et la mousse. En outre, de magnifiques paysages et quelques scènes et portraits très frappants. Un très beau livre. Peu courant.
