The VIVO cooperative ("life" in Esperanto) was formed in July 1959 following the famous exhibition organized by Tatsuo FUKUSHIMA in 1957, "10人の眼" ("The Eyes of Ten" : Yasuhiro ISHIMOTO, Kikuji KAWADA, Shun KAWAHARA, Akira SATO, Akira TANNO, Shoumei TOMATSU, Toyoko TOKIWA, Masaya NAKAMURA, Ikko NARAHARA, Eikoh HOSOE).

The Japanese photographers Ikko NARAHARA, Akira TANNO, Eikoh HOSOE, Akira SATO, Kikuji KAWADA et Shomei TOMATSU thus came to share office and black room in their Tokyo East-Ginza studio, until June 1961.

No doubt VIVO, although a brief association, was one of the most influential movements of the XXth century in the world of Japanese photography, striking the following generation of photographers such as Daido MORIYAMA (who became Eikoh HOSOE's assistant), Shunji OKURA (that of Akira SATO) or Nobuyoshi ARAKI.
A retrospective exhibition was held by Tokyo Kogei Daigaku in 2007.
