A few facts.

Hiroshi SUGIMOTO (1948-) graduated from Rikkyu University in Economics before moving to the USA in 1970 and graduating from Los Angeles Art Center College of Design in Fine Arts / Photography. He then moved to NYC, dealt in an antique art between the US and Japan for income, and begun his "Diorama" series in 1976. He held his fist solo exhibition in Japan in 1977, in New York in 1981, and won Hasselblad Photography International Award in 2001. Themes : duration, arts, history, series.

Toshio SHIBATA (1949-) completed a M.F.A. in oil painting at Tokyo University of Arts in 1974, got a scholarship in Belgium and started studying photography in the Royal Academy of Gent in 1975. He returned to Japan in 1979, held his first exhibition in the same year and numerous others since then, and was awarded the 17th Kimura Ihei Photography Award in 1992. Themes : human artefacts, particularly in remote natural settings.

Risaku SUZUKI (1963-) graduated from from the Research Department of Tokyo College of Photography in 1987 where he then has been a lecturer since 1999. Since 1990 he has held numerous exhibitions in Japan and in the USA and was awarded the prestigious Ihei Kimura Award (2000) and Photographic Society of Japan Award (2008). Themes : tradition, nature, time.

We had prepared a lengthy essay on Sugimoto, Shibata and Suzuki, but in the end prefer the reader to decide by himself so as to why these three foremost Japanese photographers appear here together.

Quelques faits.

SUGIMOTO Hiroshi (1948-) termine ses études d'économie à l'Université Rikkyu avant de déménager aux États-Unis en 1970, et sort diplômé du Los Angeles Art Center College of Design en Beaux Arts / Photographie. Il s'établit à New York, fait du commerce d'œuvres d'art anciennes entre le Japon et les USA, et commence sa série "Diorama" en 1976. Il tient sa première exposition solo au Japon en 1977, aux États-Unis en 1981, et remporte le Prix International de Photographie Hasselblad en 2001. Intérêts : durée, arts, histoire, série.

SHIBATA Toshio (1949-) termina son master de beaux-arts en peinture à l'huile à l'université des arts de Tokyo en 1974, obtint une bourse en Belgique et commença d'étudier la photographie à l'université royale de Gent en 1975. Il retourna au Japon en 1979, année de sa première exposition. Il remporta le 17ème prix Kimura Ihei en 1992. Thèmes : l'artefact humain, principalement en région reculée.

SUZUKI Risaku (1963-) sortit diplômé du département de recherche de l'Université de Photographie de Tokyo en 1987, où il enseigne depuis 1999. Il a donné de nombreuses expositions au Japon et aux États-Unis, et reporta les prestigieux Prix Kimura Ihei (2000) et de la Société Photographique du Japon (2008). Thèmes : traditions, nature, temps.

Nous avions préparé un essai longuet sur Sugimoto, Shibata et Suzuki, mais en fin de compte préférons laisser au lecteur le soin de décider par lui-même pourquoi ces trois photographes japonais majeurs se retrouvent ici ensemble.
