DOMON Ken & KIMURA Ihei

Ken DOMON (1909-1990) and Ihei KIMURA (1901-1974) may be considered as the two most prominent Japanese photographers in the XXth century. In a few words, both were engaged photographers, proponents of social-humanist documentary and photo-realism and showed deep interest in Japan's traditional life, Domon through the study of Buddhist temples and artefacts, Kimura through that of Japan's rural life.
The Domon Ken Award and Kimura Ihei Award for New Photographers were set up in their honor and remain major photography awards in Japan.

DOMON Ken (1909-1990) et KIMURA Ihei (1901-1974) peuvent être considérés comme les deux photographes japonais majeurs du XXe siècle. En quelques mots, tous deux furent photographes engagés, avocats du documentaire social-humaniste et du photo-réalisme, et furent profondément intéressés par la vie traditionnelle au Japon, Domon par l'étude des temples et objets bouddhiques, Kimura par celle de la vie rurale japonaise.
Les prix Domon Ken et Kimura Ihei pour les Nouveaux photographes furent établis en leur honneur et demeurent des prix de photographie majeurs au Japon.
