IRIE Taikichi / KUZUNISHI Sosei
Taikichi IRIE (1905-1992) and Sosei KUZUNISHI (1912-?) were both talented photographers of the Showa period, that have both cared to depict the folkloric, traditional, religious & artistic side of a quiet countryside Japan about to be lost.
One born in Nara and the other in Osaka, their work focused on the traditional aspects of the region around Kyoto and Nara: the temples, their long history and treasures of architecture and sculpture, the beautiful natural and rural landscapes (not unlike those of Kinsuke Shimada or Yoichi Midorikawa) of old sacred paths, and the traditional art forms (Bunraku, Kyogen).
Both can be affiliated to a romantic trend of photography, focused on what was thought to be the roots of Japan and of the Japanese soul, away from the great urban and industrial changes of the 1950s-70s. Thus their fortune also, since many among the Japanese shared the same 'Taisho nostalgia'.
Irie, who had the better commercial success, published a number of oversized photobooks, while Kuzunishi, as one of the main illustrating photographers of the excellent publisher Tanko, appeared in more compact volumes — both always with careful design and high quality paper and printing — the amazing photogravure of the 1950s-70s: connoisseurs will love — and later works in color for Irie. Great treats for photobooks and Japan lovers and collectors, and two of our personal favorite photographers.
