Remarques & avis / Review — Voici une de mes séries préférées : la collection spéciale du Taiyo (le Soleil) trimestriel — iconographie riche et de qualité, bonne facture, sujets variés et toujours passionnants, très "japonais".
Ce numéro est consacré à un météore énigmatique de l'estampe japonaise : Toshusai-Sharaku, qui ne publia ses œuvres que pendant six mois en 1794, et représenta surtout des acteurs de kabuki, et quelques sumotori. L'exceptionnel de ce numéro est qu'il présente pour la première fois en couleurs nombre des ukiyoe de Sharaku (une centaine, sur les 140 connues), à pleine page le plus souvent, dont trois sur papier Japon en taille originale. Excellent numéro.
Here is one of my favorite series : the special issues of Taiyo (the Sun), a quarterly — fine and profuse iconography, good printing and paper, and always fascinating, varied and very "Japanese" topics.
This issue is dedicated to the mysterious comet of Japanese woodblock prints : Toshusai-Sharaku, who made his works public only during 6 months in 1794, and depicted mainly kabuki actors and a few sumo wrestlers. This issue is exceptional because it shows for the first time in color many of Sharaku's ukiyoe (one hundred in all, out of the 140 know), in full page most of the time, among which 3 on washi (Japanese paper) in original size. Excellent issue.
