Remarques & avis / ReviewShomei TOMATSU initially spent one year and a half in Okinawa to witness the retrocession of the territory to Japan, but whereas nothing really happened and US soldiers and military bases stayed, the photographer ended up changed by his journey, and his photography changed too, through the two parts of the Pencil of the Sun, one in black, dedicated to the Okinawan archipelago, the various traditions & everyday lives of her people, and the other in color, dedicated to South-East Asia and its cities and villages, harbors and people, to which Okinawa may indeed be culturally closer. Numerous fantastic portraits, and the light all around.
