Remarques & avis / Review — This is a volume which, in truth, pleases both the eye and the hand. Tokyo might be attractive — fascination, speed, mass, post-modern, and the contrast, very much liked by commentators, megapole and disctrict life —, but the heart of the old-continent-ers in travel or stay, is no doubt taken by Kyoto : human-sized former capital-city and houses, less decided than constrainted by mountains and laws, old wooden districts, wealth of temples and shrines, the Gion of the geishas and the old malls... Every little thing has an timeless touch, and the illusion of the unchanged strikes both the traveller and the resident.
The publisher Tanko-shinsha and excellent photographers such as KUZUNISHI Sosei and Taikichi IRIE, deliver here the Kyoto of the 1950s, in those numerous and marvellous helio-engravings of black and of white, through temples, greenery and rivers, pathways, shops and gardens, industries, arts and crafts, feasts, markets, festivals. Lots of faces, too, and a special mention to the pictures of working craftmen — for a city is made, before all, of her people. Great piece of art and a truly beautiful book.
