Remarques & avis / Review — In this beautiful large-sized photobook, Ken DOMON (1909-1990) attempts to sythetize his esthetic leaning toward Japan : What fascinates me here ? His perseverance in photographic questioning and in introspection through takes commands admiration — all the more so as Domon was very incapacitated following three strokes in 1960, 1968 et 1976. Part of his answers are found here, through the traditional Japan of buddhism, seasons, art: temples and sculptures, potteries and paintings, flowers and cherry-trees, masks and gardens, maple-trees and lotus, theater and puppets (bunraku)... A sense of detail and colors which many famous eyes lack.
Dans ce beau grand format, DOMON Ken (1909-1990) tente la synthèse de son penchant esthétique pour le Japon : Qu'est-ce qui me fascine ici ? La persévérance dans le questionnement photographique et retour à soi par le cliché force l'admiration — d'autant plus que Domon était fortement incapacité suite à trois attaques cérébrales en 1960, 1968 et 1976. Une part des réponses est donnée ici, à travers le Japon traditionnel, bouddhique, saisonnier, artistique : temples et sculptures, poteries et peintures, fleurs et cerisiers, masques et jardins, érables et lotus, théâtre et marionnettes (bunraku)... Un sens du détail et de la couleur qui manque à bien des yeux célèbres.
