Remarques & avis / Review — Here is one of our favorite series: the special issues of Taiyo (the Sun), a quarterly — fine and profuse iconography, good printing and paper, and always fascinating, varied and very "Japanese" topics.
The present issue is dedicated to UTAGAWA-HIROSHIGE (1797-1858) and presents an impressive and representative collection of his painted and woodblock-printed works, mainly: his paintings of famous places in Yedo (Tokyo: Yoshiwara, Nihonbashi, Asakusa) ; his paintings of Japanese beauties, of warriors and animals, and some works of art of his three picture-books ; his landscpae paintings (Arashiyama, Naruto, Yamanaka...), including all the works of his 53 stages of the Tokaido. A beautiful, well-crafted issue, with a tremendous load of plates and colors, which also entails 3 sets of variants of the same ukiyoes, and Hiroshige's great ghost-animal scenes.
