Remarques & avis / ReviewShimpei ASAI was the only official photographer during the Beatles' stay in Tokyo (29/06-03/07/1966) for their mythical concert at the Budokan, and had access to their hotel rooms. Thus was made Shimpei ASAI's first photobook and the legendary Beatles Tokyo, in a photo-documentary approach, where we follow the Beatles out of the airplane, to their rooms and face-to-face, their meals and their remains, playing with Japanese theater masks, etc., with comments by the Japanese critic KUSAMORI Shinichi (1938-2008). Fine pictures of the Beatles, in group, on stage, in their hotel rooms, superb individual portraits, details, and excellent layout and printing.
A facsimile, now also rare and sought-after, was printed in 1976, which a few hints tell apart from the rarer present first edition. A new monochrome edition, revised and augmented with texts, was published in 1995 by the Japan Times editions.
A mythical photobook, and a precious testimony.
