Yoshio WATANABE (1907-2000) was a renowned Japanese photographer who worked much on Japanese historical and sacred monuments, especially the Ise shrine, and was interested in the differences between the Western world and Japan. He contributed to the creation of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in Ebisu, of which he became the first director. It was in 1953 that he shooted the shrine of Ise — the most important shrine in all Japan — and its surroundings for the first time: Jingu to Ise-ji is the result of 15 years of work, in a large, well-crafted, slipcased volume. A beautiful photobook on the core of shintoism.

Remarques & avis / ReviewYoshio WATANABE comes back to the great Shrine of Ise on the occasion of its rebuilding (which occurs every 20 years) — beautiful shots of these impressive and complex wooden structures, in soft nuances of gray and colors, in a fine oversized volume.
