Remarques & avis / Review — UMEHARA Ryuzaburo (1888-1886) is a Western-style Japanese painter inspired by impressionism and post-impressionism (mainly Auguste Renoir, Paul Gauguin and Camille Pissaro), who also integrated elements of nihonga (Japanese painting) into his own. His influence was such that the 1925-1940 period was dubbed "Yasui-Umehara era" (Yasui, after the name of the painter Sotaro YASUI). He received the Order of Cultural Merit in 1952 and the Asahi Culture Prize in 1956.
These three volumes are an excellent selection from his painted works, present some drafts and drawings, very well-printed (etching?) on fine paper, and some pictures of the artist in his atelier. A beautiful set.
